Today, in bobymoore’s hattrick blog, we have a closer look at the wage usage of some teams in our first division in Luxembourg. Of course those teams are very much still maturing but with 2 years playing they represent interesting data.
This article is the third of the series which started with:
- Principles of wages optimization: where you should start to optimize your wages
- Preparing a budget for your team: knowing when to stop buying new players
This analysis presents a simple way of analyzing wages, simply line by line.
1) Ocean Dragons (defensive): 640kEUR, with 47% for midfielders, 38% for the goal keeper and 8% for his forwards
2) Spora(full off): 622kEUR, with 65% for midfielders, 25% for forwards
3) Gainesvillerockcity(balanced): 520kEUR, with 66% for midfielders, 16% for forwards, 12% for defenders.
4) Rouden Leiw 04(defensive/balanced): 447kEUR, with 38% for defenders, 28% for midfielders, 27% for forwards
5) Fight Club Football(balanced winger): 429kEUR, with 57% for midfielders, 21% for defenders, 9% for forwards, 8% for the goalkeeper
6) Fc formatdepoche(defensive/CA): 402kEUR, with 39% for defenders, 38% for midfielders, 17% for forwards
As expected the figures show both that midfield is for all teams at least a third of the wage budget and the most expensive line is also the well known strength of the team. This means that those teams are spending the money on the lines they want to be strong into (defense for CA teams, midfield for most of the other teams)
What the hell is balanced in 66% midfielders and what is defensive in 47% midfielders and only 38% in Gk?
The 6th example is also quite crappy, as you need better forwards to play CA, their 17% share is too low. And if you play CA, you clearly don’t need 38% of your wages going into midfielders.

Thanks, that is precisely the point, teams dont usually optimize well their salaries for the tactics they intend to use.
Re-reading this old post, i am not so sure the exact purpose of the message was clear. And basically this post was prepared in 2006 to understand how some well-known (at the time) luxembourgish team were spending their budget.
I need also to warn on figures from 2 years ago when many things were quite different in the game.
And anyway the most important in this post is that it motivates any manager to decide 3-4 main tactics you will use and focus your money in getting the correct players for it.
